"An Ode to the National Geographic Collagist"

Hmmm...just noticed that word: "collagist." 'Never heard that one before.

Anyway, the point of this post is to draw your attention to a good article on collage from the point of view of a National Geographic photographer, and an even better set of collages by various artists (just keep scrolling down): here.

I'll be curious to hear what y'all think...one thing that really strikes me is, if a National Geographic photographer is celebrating collages made with the magazine's collages, then copyright infringement is truly not an issue. And I've always worried more about using Nat Geo images, than almost any other source!

  1. WoW! What a way to start the day. I thoroughly enjoyed scrolling through the collages, thanks for this link. Everyone should have a look.

I found this webpage that might be of interest re: Some Questions About Fair Use. Written by Linda Joy Kattwinkel, Esq. Intellectual Property and Arts Attorney at Owen, Wickersham & Erickson:

  2. Lovely stuff! I often raid the pages of NG for images. Some really beautiful photography in there especially in the older issues and the ads were great too!

  3. Our very own Tim Manthey is featured among the artists. He posts here as cloudnectar.

  4. That "really beautiful photography" in the older issues is what's always worried me about using their images, Michael—because, for a long time, there was an identifiable, super-gorgeous style of Nat Geo photography. I remember when I was a kid in the 1960s, looking at scrapbook collections of photos or little collages other kids would make, I could always tell which of the images were from National Geographic, even if it was just a snippet of the image. But maybe that was because no other magazines, at that time, had color images in high resolution with good color processing. These days, many magazines have superb photography.

  6. Great to see Tim's work included here! And thanks for bringing this our attention, Fi. I won't worry quite so much when actively infringing the National Geo copyright from now on...!

  8. Hey friends, Thanks for the compliments :)
I gotta tell ya, when I recieved the email from Nat Geo, the headline was: "Do You Use National Geographic Images In Your Collages???" I felt like Doc Brown, "They found me... I don't know how, but they found me...RUN FOR IT MARTY!"
But alas, there was nothing to fear and everything to rejoice in. They seem to appreciate the collaging very much. So fear not, and snip-snip-snip to your hearts content!
