ammonite woman pauses to clear her syphon

I did have a dream the other night that I had tentacles, but mostly I think it would be cool to be an ammonite. You'd have most of your body tucked away in a hard shell, use your syphon to jet around in the ocean, control your buoyancy with gas bubbles, and of course, use your ten tentacles to catch things to eat. (In this version, one of the long tentacles with the pad on the end is modified to have an elbow and fingers.)

The ammonites were closely related to the modern squid, octopus, and cuttlefish. But they are no more: the last of them died out the same time the dinosaurs did.

If you're wondering why ammonite woman's shell is such a shiny gold color, it's because the rock of the fossil was replaced with iron pyrite (fool's gold).

  1. Excellent and great title too! You must have had lots of cheese and pickle before retiring!

    2. Ah, this fact would help explain the "clear her syphon" portion of the title...super collage, Fi!

  3. Nicely done. I like the background a lot. Reminiscent of the work of outsider artist Martin Ramirez. I wear an ammonite around my neck, on a leather cord. I like it's vibe.

    1. Thanks, Angie—and thanks so much for the gift you sent me! =smile= I got the Art Deco paper for the background from Rochester Art Supply : if you look under "Decorative Papers" you will see where thy have hundreds of gorgeous papers. (You're going to hate me for giving yountht link...)

    2. Ha ha...a collage artist can never have too much paper, just as someone who sews (that is me also) can never have too much fabric. I will die leaving behind a great stash for my nieces who also sew and create art!
