ammonite woman pauses to clear her syphon

From my archives.

I think it would be cool to be an ammonite. You'd have most of your body tucked away in a hard shell, use your syphon to jet around in the ocean, control your buoyancy with gas bubbles, and of course, use your ten tentacles to catch things to eat. (In this version, one of the long tentacles with the pad on the end is modified to have an elbow and fingers.)

The ammonites were closely related to the modern squid, octopus, and cuttlefish. But they are no more: the last of them died out the same time the dinosaurs did.

If you're wondering why ammonite woman's shell is such a shiny gold color, it's because the rock of the fossil was replaced with iron pyrite (fool's gold).

  1. Indeed an interesting imagination to be an ammonite. And a very nice collage, Fi. I like the combination of painted tentacles and the pattern in the back.

  2. Well crafted image. I like all the patterns that go together nicely, mirroring each other. Also the knowing look on the woman's face is priceless.

Thanks for all the info on ammonite life. I have an ammonite pendant (fossilized piece that is encircled in sterling and has a loop so it can be worn as a necklace that I should wear more often.

    1. LOL the last sentence above is clumsy because I edited it and didn't reread it.

  3. She's part of a group of prehistoric predators...perhaps that explains her expression... And, I hate it when my siphon gets clogged, so I'm sympathetic. (Love the interplay between the background pattern and the tentacles, Fi, very nice!)

  4. She really shines in her fool's gold Fi and for such an old lady she's still good looking!
