Inspired by Michael's Republica de Coll stamp last week I've gone for
a Map of the Continent of Collagia. It all got a bit big for the scanner and
I stuck it to the wall for a snap.

I got really really hungry for a piece of you know what as I created this map of The Cake Islands.  Created with the help of a vintage recipe booklet from The Calumet Baking Powder Company, Chicago, Illinois.

New Theme! Create A Map ... Could Be a Map of a New Country or a Mythical Kingdom ... Or a Map To ?

Ron mentioned something about creating a collage country for our next theme, so I think this fits in nicely with that thought.

This is my last week picking a month's worth of themes and it's been fun!  Hope you've had fun as well and I must say the collages created in the past couple of weeks have been outstanding!

Stamp Commemorating "Bobo" - The First Circus Dog in Space

I made this stamp in memory of my cousin, Walter J. Wild, who years ago sketched a postage stamp featuring the moon.  He gave me the scrap of paper he drew it on and I treasure it.  Walter passed away on January 11, 1999.  This is a paragraph from his obituary published by the AAS (American Astronomical Society):

"Walter J. Wild, a senior research associate in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, collapsed and died at the age of 44 while attending a lecture at the University on January 11, 1999. Walter was known world-wide as an expert on the mathematics of adaptive optics, a real time technique for compensation of image distortion caused by atmospheric turbulence."

The background of the moon & stars was taken from "Our Old Fashioned Country Diary for 1994" and the dog is an illustration by Corinne R. Bailey for the children's book " I Want To Be A Circus Man " 1934.

Collaborative Mail Art Stamps 1985

Just to give you some idea of the mail art stamps I made back in the 80's and 90's I have uploaded these I did with Steve Random of Maine USA. I did 80% of it as I recall! Some of these were turned into rubber stamps to apply to envelopes etc. I must have made a few dozen or so sheets over the years. Will be fun to make a new one after all this time.

Something dramatic and life-altering has just happened in my personal life. It's neither a good thing nor a bad thing: it's just a whammy. So I'm going to have to take a sabbatical from making collages for the Kollage Kit. I'll still be following the action, and commenting from time to time, but I won't be posting any collages for a while. I'll be back, though—in a few months, perhaps—it's hard to tell. Carry on!

I swear, this was the first line that popped in my head when the theme was announced on Thursday morning, and ever since it's been like an ear worm—running over and over in a maddening tape loop. So I had no choice. I know in the song Rocky checks into a saloon, but for some reason I've always imagined it as a cheap motel somewhere out west. Maybe that's because I've never been in a saloon.

The raccoon is scanned from Walker's Mammals of North America. I googled to find Gideon's bible and the motel accoutrements. Rocky's hat is clip art. And the photo of the motel sign was taken by Patti Sundstrom, who took a special trip up and down Route 66 to photograph its splendors.

Sorry I've been absent lately. I've been working on a big show w/ the Collagemonauts (me, Tim Manthey & Craig van den Bosch) and we finally put the work up on Sunday. Meanwhile, I'm a huge fan of the Beatles so here's an oldie but a goodie from me.

Nowhere Man is a found photograph.  The magnifying glass inspired this and came from my October 2012 issue of Country Living Magazine.  The entire background is from a 1950 issue of GRAPHIS--it is the work of the design team of illustrators Jan Lewitt (1907-1991) and George Him (1900-1981).

This is a recurring nightmare - I either can't remember someone's complete phone number, I can't dial without making errors or we get disconnected.  Also along this theme, I sometimes am able to speak to dead loved ones on the phone in dreams.  Ironically, I rarely speak on the phone while awake.

Daydream

I used to have this pleasant little daydream when I was a kid:  I would lay on my back in the middle of the floor, imagine that the house had been turned upside down, and pretend to play and walk around on the ceiling, stepping over the tops of the inverted door jambs, sitting on the light fixtures (yes, I was an easily amused child...).

Peaceful rural scene is an end-paper from a vintage American Heritage History of the United States.  Sleeping beauty is clipped from a vintage magazine ad for blankets.  And "Betty" is from an ad in a 1950 copy of GRAPHIS 31 - An International Journal for Graphic & Applied Art.
