Subtly Psychedelic

Yes, that is Twiggy's eye.  The psychedelic patterned circle is from an album cover (circa 1968) designed by The Fool (a Dutch design collective) for the British psychedelic group "The Move".

san fran, '66-'69

What a great theme! I'm looking forward to making a new psychedelic collage, but I can't resist kicking things off with this one I made about a year and a half ago. The images are all taken from posters for Bill-Graham-produced rock concerts in San Francisco, 1966-69.

Theme of the Week - Psychedelic

This was a popular theme back in the days of Scrapiteria and no reason why it shouldn't be again. So turn off your mind, relax and float downstream!

tiny nurses from the future

Background is an English country fairground, circa 1885. Man in red is from a 17th century German engraving (hand-tinted) of a conjurer at work.

Nurses are from a photo collection (also hand-tinted) assembled in the 1940s & 1950s, in the archives of the National Library of Medicine (USA). They are (left to right) from the Philippines, Denmark, British Honduras, Hong Kong, Madeira, Kenya, Nepal, Dominican Republic, and Colombia.

The bunny rabbit is from my scrap pile.

Saint Numismia ~ Patron Saint of Coin Collectors

Although Saint Eligius (French c. 588 - 1 December 660) is the patron saint of goldsmiths, other metalworkers and coin collectors I thought it might be fun to create an alternate.  Thanks to Amedeo Modigliani (1884 - 1920) for the use of the lovely Jeanne Hebuterne as my inspiration for Saint Numismia!

Will New Devices Save the Americans?

Have been amusing myself today by making collages from one skinny little issue of Time Magazine.  Given everyone's propensity for collecting new electronic devices (please don't ask me how many cell phones I have gathering dust in one drawer...), it seemed on point for this theme.

The Shell Collector

I have to admit I made this collage about five years ago but it has always been one of my all time favorites.  The woman is a found photograph.  Shells are from a reference book.  As I recall the background pattern is an image from a copy of The Saturday Book which is a marvelous source of collage inspiration and material.

Snakes-Collection

The planned release of her husband´s snakes-collection:

Cut and paste collage 2013, 23,5 x 26 cm

Ok - it´s another release..... and it´s a bit macabre - but I´m a black humour one  - sometimes.
Nothing for someone with a snake phobia.

diatom collector has a disconcerting dream

Diatoms (aka phytoplankton) are protists—microscopic critters that are neither plants nor animals—in the the clade called Heterokontophyta. This clade has 177 families and at least 200,000 species. Diatoms are sometimes called "water moulds" because they grow & feed like moulds. But unlike true moulds, which are fungi, diatoms have plant-like cell walls.

When I showed this collage to my husband, he said, "That's how I feel about our house: tiny things are expanding to great size. Like our books—they're multiplying in the shadows." =laugh=

Butterfly-Collection

Setting free a butterfly-collection:

Collage 2012, 18 x 25 cm

A collage actually made for the Sketchbook Project 2013 - but it fits so perfectly to the topic this week.

The Rock Collectors

I was hoping to be well enough to make a new collage today but as you can see I've been raiding the archives again. Hopefully I shall have shaken off this virus over the weekend and do something new by Monday.

dada palm trees

English translation (clockwise starting at top):
—Forward dada
—DADA
—anyone can be a Dadaist.
—Dada all over the world.
—is dada curable????
—The Over-dada.

Phrases are from front cover of Richard Huelsenbeck's En avant dada. (1920)

Bazonka by Spike MIlligan

Bazonka

Say Bazonka every day
That's what my grandma used to say
It keeps at bay the Asian Flu'
And both your elbows free from glue.
So say Bazonka every day
(That's what my grandma used to say)

Don't say it if your socks are dry!
Or when the sun is in your eye!
Never say it in the dark
(The word you see emits a spark)
Only say it in the day
(That's what my grandma used to say)

Young Tiny Tim took her advice
He said it once, he said it twice
he said it till the day he died
And even after that he tried
To say Bazonka! every day
Just like my grandma used to say.

Now folks around declare it's true
That every night at half past two
If you'll stand upon your head
And shout Bazonka! from your bed
You'll hear the word as clear as day
Just like my grandma used to say!

DREAM

The motion in this piece is static.  Dreamlike.

The image and all the lines are cut out of a college literary magazine from the 1970s.  Some of the lines were from short stories and others from poems.  I assembled and re-assembled until I made this verse entitled DREAM.

The poet is dead

Based on an 18th century nursery rhyme. Source unknown.

trochee mania

A trochee ("tro-kee") is a metrical foot in poetry: it's a stressed syllable followed by an unstressed one. For example, "Double, double" is two trochees.

With apologies to Longfellow, Shakespeare, and Bruce Springsteen.

Beauty

I choosed  Kurt Schwitters´s Dada phonetic poem: "What a b what a b what a beauty" (1944)
And here´s my collage

A Bird and its Haiku

Last year I made an accordion-style artist's book called "16 Ways of Looking At a Blackbird" (with apologies to Wallace Stevens for title theft...) that paired collage and poetry.  Each collage picture included the image of a bird and I wrote a haiku for each picture.  Across the tops of the pages I cut a "scrolling" scene of birds, reeds, grasses, etc. Here's the poem for the picture you see above:

Milady looks through
and sees the absence of love.
It’s the price she pays.

Piano Teeth

Piano Teeth.  Chewing Melody Machine.

My apologies to Michael for not participating in a very long time.

Down.Down.Down.Down.

A minimalist collaged poem.

Theme of the Week - Poetry In Motion

I'm fond of cut-up poetry so thought it might make a good theme. It doesn't have to be poetry of course, prose will do, or even the idea of motion in a broader sense. Have fun!

The Quick Brown Fox Jumped Over the Lazy Dog

Background art is "El Pelele" (The Puppet) 1791 by Francisco de Goya.  The fox is from a National Geographic book about wild animals.  The lazy dog is from a book on dogs and this breed was identified as an Eskimo dog (which is hardly lazy but looked big and sluggish to me!)

Theme of the Week - My Pet

This could be a pet or pets - cats, dogs, rabbits, fish, aardvarks or something more exotic maybe ? Have fun!

eight gods of the foot

On the left below the tiger are Buddha, Horus, and Jesus. On the right in the middle are some Chinese god (maybe Hotai) and the Virgin of Guadalupe. The others are deities without names.

American Tools

I'm cheating a bit here using some failed collages of the past to muster up some dodgy new collages of which this is one. Perhaps 2013 will be just one re-hash after another , who knows!

No Arms, No Hands (And Yet Their Coats Have Pockets...)

(GQ spawns a fashionable mystery.)

Unsightly Body Hair

Another from the archive as I'm still not back into collage mode after the holidays. This was from a concertina book I made a few years back.

"The Chief Function of the Body Is To Carry the Brain Around" ~ Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931)

Yes, that brainy quote is real.  Background from March, 1959 House Beautiful magazine feature on color schemes.  Men in suits from a June, 1954 advertisement for HI-TEST Artist Oil Colors.  Brain snipped from a Dover clip-art book.

Birdman's Final Flight

This one was too large to fit on the scanner so hopefully the photo is OK.
