The 8th plague = locusts = grasshoppers. The common name for that African species is foaming grasshopper, 'cause not only is it toxic to eat (check out bright red markings to warn predators), but it secretes a noxious foam.

The two figures are from a painting by Hans Holbein. The naked guy is supposed to be Man. I don't know who the other guy is. I made it through junior high Latin, so I'll hazard a wild guess that the inscription on the rock says, "I am miserable Man something something my body is mortal." No shit!

Revelations Revised

I began a new collage series awhile back with the goal of making my own versions of the kind of gory, scary scenes found in the Book of Revelations.  Since I re-write the text a little (!) and give it a bit of a skeptical, atheistic slant, I call the series "Revelations Revised." If I ever collect enough of them, I'll make some kind of demented collage bible book, but since I've only managed four to date, that may not be happening any time soon....

Here's the first one:  Those People Hardened Their Hearts.

trouble in paradise

I made this collage today for a "Year of the Snake" swap...I couldn't resist re-titling it for this fun Biblical theme. Background text is from the entry on "serpents" in an 1880 encyclopedia, printed on handmade Thai paper with banana leaf inclusions. South American guava-tree scene is from an engraving credited to Albertus Seba, although I doubt he did the work himself.

Seba was a Dutch pharmacist who set up his business next to the Amsterdam harbor in 1700. He started by asking sailors and ship surgeons to bring exotic plants and animal products he could use for preparing drugs, then got into collecting specimens of snakes, birds, insects, shells and lizards in his house. Apparently Linnaeus visited Seba's collection a couple of times and used it as part of the basis for his famous classification system.

My husband is a biologist: he poured over books trying to figure out the species of the bird and snake depicted. He concluded that the bird is probably a hummingbird, but its shape isn't quite right, so it may have been preserved in a faulty way. The snake he couldn't find in any of his snake books, so either it's extinct, or else the colors are fanciful.

The January issue of American Laboratory magazine had a photomicrograph taken under polarized light on its cover. I don't know what exactly it was a picture of, because they're having a "guess what chemical" contest: they said it was a carcinogen that's been used in the manufacture of dyes. I chopped up the image and layered part of it on top of itself.

The phrase "Better Living Through Chemistry" is a variant of a DuPont advertising slogan, "Better Things for Better Living...Through Chemistry." It was their slogan from 1935 to 1982. According to Wikipedia, "This statement is used for commentary on several different topics, from the promotion of prescription or recreational drugs, to the praise of chemicals and plastics, to the sarcastic criticism of the same."

It's also the title of a superb album by Fatboy Slim.
