Moments Before the Official Portrait
Queen Victoria and her close family kept numerous pet animals. I have included Lory, a parrot, Dash, a King Charles Spaniel, Hector, a Deerhound, Islay, a Skye Terrier, and her beloved Turi, a Pomeranian who lay on her deathbed at her request.

Beach Party in the Shadow of The Cliff House
The famed Cliff House Restaurant, built 1896 in San Francisco, California by Adolph Sutro was a 7-story Victorian chateau called by some "The Gingerbread Palace". It survived the 1906 earthquake but burned to the ground September 7, 1907.

where water meets earth
With orange acrylic paint. Background: Caroline Islands, Palau Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, from photo by Reinhard Dirscherl. I have no info about the other images, but I suspect that the painting (woodcut?) in upper right is by Hokusai.

muy interesante
Map in background: part of central and southern portions, with red rectangles around two of my favorite places, Cuernavaca and Oaxaca.
Colorful frame: border of 19th century serape, the red dye of which is cochineal.
Upper left: painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe by Pedro Ramirez.
Upper right: from a Huichol man's ceremonial costume
Middle right: from a turn-of-the-century engraving by José Guadalupe Posada for a newspaper broadsheet (its banner headline is below: "Muy Interesante"), depicting a true crime. (The full scene includes the baby's mother lying dead at the crazy man's feet.)
Hand-carved rubber stamps: (top to bottom) acrobats, figures w/ scissors, gentleman w/ top hat & cane, man in traditional attire drinking cervesa (beer), and man reading newspaper—by a French artist. These are based on Posada's popular skull-n-skeleton images, now widely known and associated with the Day of the Dead.
Lower right: vendor of copal (tree resin used as incense and in varnish) with his burro.
Lower left: wood carving of coyote-skeleton-mermaid by Antonio Xuana.
An American Actress, An American House and An American Alligator (or Two)
Here are the facts! Norma Talmadge (1894-1957) was an American actress & film producer of the silent era. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey. That is Norma standing in front of The Charles T. Cook Residence (completed 1885), Elberon, New Jersey (Cook was president of Tiffany and Co.) a fine example of an American country home of the "Gilded Age". Around Norma's feet are American Alligators (alligator mississippiensi). These are the largest reptiles in North America. (Little known fact: Norma Talmadge had a pet alligator named Peter!)

SAVE WATER
I picked up a nice old book about Chile that had page after page black & white images. And it was the kind of paper I like working with best--matte. So I found the happy bathers in it. I do believe the barren trees on the horizon are also from the same book. Then I found the airship with the words of wisdom. Lastly I found another image in my scrap box featuring a waterway and a bridge so I carefully cut that out to go above the bathing scene. (Note: Michael Leigh pointed out this image is of a UK bridge, so oops! my collage is not exactly all about The Americas!) All pasted down on an old book cover.
The Americas
Hi all. Glad to follow in Josephine's footsteps and take over for the next couple of months at Kollage Kit. This week, up for grabs The New World - all things in North, South or Central American culture, geography, history, people etc..... Let the snipping begin.
