A Happy Halloween...

This came out more macabre than I'd intended! What I thought of was that the skeleton, with "no body to go with" to the Halloween party, had somehow obtained an E-Legs power-exoskeleton so that it could join in with the celebrations after all, and had brought some spooky party favours, which it was looking at delightedly.... but the power-exoskeleton, once I'd freed it from its original background, looks more like calipers, and so the whole thing became a bit ghost-of-Tiny-Tim-like instead!
Whichever, at least the skeleton still looks happy.

delivered into dark

For those of you in other countries, Hallowe'en may have some novelty, but I'm in America: the excitement of late October goes back as long as I can remember. My collage for this season is about the colors and moods of the holiday—always for me an escape into darkness.

I was allowed to go trick-r-treating by myself from a very early age. In the fifties and sixties the country was much darker at night—not so many bright lights everywhere. There were pools of deep black all over the place, sometimes even at the strangers' doors I knocked on.

I love darkness. I even trip on terror.

This week's theme: Aaaaargh! It's got to be Halloween!

G-G-G-Ghosties, Ghoulies and Long-Legged Beasties trick or treating
with Drac, Frank and Wolfie, scaring the heebie-jeebies out of everyone
at the Witching Hour for some candy, fruit, nuts and maybe some pennies……and perhaps a few collages!

Eric and Ernie

Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise (very famous UK comedy duo in the 60s, 70s and maybe 80s too?) seen here in the company of quite a famous UK music quartet... with hindsight, I think the white outlines were not a good idea, as they detract from the image, but hey, you live and learn...
The 'wings' are form "Northwest Coast Indian Art" by Bill Holm, and the background is from "The Moog Strikes Bach", a water-damaged item I found in a record-shop bargain-bin for 99p.

Homecoming 2

Confession time – this is not a cut-and-paste job, but a rip-and-tear-down, from a billboard that was falling apart (it's since been taken down and replaced by a shiny metal one) down the hill from us, and the skew-wiff angle it's all at wasn't strictly intentional either, just the random way I scanned it in, intending to assemble the different pieces together afterwards, but after seeing what it came out like, I decided to keep as is...
But it says Home to me, even though I've never shared any living-space with a canine pal, and so I thought I'd post this as my second collage this week, just in case I never get to do anything more with it! The rips and tears, exposing older posters underneath, seem to signify memories to me, and their faded/changing nature over time, so yes, here it is anyway :)

/ˈHəʊmkʌmɪŋ/

Well, okay, 'Homecoming' really, but the phonetic spelling looked more mysterious and alien!

my abstract home

As I have mentioned before, I had a blighted childhood. So "home" is just an abstract concept for me.

Monica was Proud of Her Little House on the Lake Which Had Plenty of Windows and Doors, Letting in Lots of Natural Light

Pinched for time this week, I went way back into the archives. This collage was created for the Flickr group SCRAPITERIA in 2011. It's always been a favorite of mine so I am happy to put it on view again. Trying to create NEW collage before Thursday (I have an idea, but just no time to execute!)

Never Play a Game of Chicken With a Professional Acrobat

Rebel Without A Cause (1955) is one of my all time favorite movies. Starring James Dean, there is a scene in the movie outlined here:

Two players (read, teenage boys) decide to settle a dispute (read, teenage girl) by way of near-death experiences. Each speeds an automobile towards a cliff (or at each other, in later adaptations). A simple rule governs the challenge: the first to jump out of his automobile is the chicken and, by universally accepted social convention, concedes the object in dispute. The second to jump is victorious, and, depending on context, becomes gang leader, prom king, etc.
Of course, if both jump simultaneously, a stalemate results, and if neither jumps, a fiery death is assured since all cars (in movies) explode upon impact.
The game of chicken has been featured in many films, though the first, Rebel without a Cause, still sets the standard.

shooting the moon (game of hearts)

For those of you who don't know the card game called "Hearts": Hearts, and the Queen of Spades, are bad. They accrue points when you take them in tricks. The Queen of Spades counts for 13 hearts. The aim is to have as low a score as possible. There is one very daring maneuver one may try, called "Shooting the Moon." When you Shoot the Moon, you take ALL the hearts, plus the Queen of Spades, and you get zero points, whereas all the other players get 26. It's not easy to do, but it's fun if you can pull it off.

The Queen of Spades is adapted from a Gibson girl in her underwear, before she's attached the extra hair piece on top. The background is found papers in shades of green, evoking the green baize table card games are often played on.

Fish Glass Toss at the Carnival of Inappropriate Games

If your ping pong ball lands in a glass you win the fish! Really? I remember Gold Fish Bowl Toss when I was a kid. Poor little fishies.

By the way, from the archives to start this theme.
