The line "Dear Pig, are you willing to sell for one shilling your ring?" comes from the famous nonsense poem "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat" by Edward Lear, published in 1872.
In this third stanza of the poem, the Owl and the Pussy-Cat ask the Piggy-wig to sell them the ring off his nose for one shilling so they can get married. The Pig agrees, and a turkey marries them the very next day. Okay, I NEVER knew the entire poem and this is all news to me! A PIG and a TURKEY?!
Ha ha! Excellent! A great song was made of it too that used to be played a lot on the radio when I was a lad. You can probably find it on You Tube. I think the original was by Elton Hayes but Donovan does a good version of it too.
