I have no idea what the blue oval with the eyeball? tree? fish? is about, but it was right there after "DADA siegt!"

I've been busy cutting up more art books. 1 is Raphael's "The Dream of Scipio" circa 1500. 2 is Esteban Murillo's "A Girl and Her Duenna" circa 1665-75. 3 is Auguste Renoir's "Bather with a Griffon" circa 1870. 4 is Correggio's "Jupiter and Io" circa 1532. 5 is Jacques Louis David's "The Death of Marat" circa 1793. 6 is Caspar David Friedrich's "The Wreck of the 'Hoffnung' circa 1821.

THEME: Must Include Letters and Numbers in Your Collage

Hello Kollage Kit artists. This is my last pick for May 2016 themes and I am including elements I normally do not include in any of my collages...letters and numbers. So this will be a real challenge for me. Hope you had fun with my themes. You all made such interesting and inventive pieces.

All About Eve

That's Laura Ziegler's bronze entitled "Eve", 1958.  Eve has just been banished from The Garden of Eden and therefore covered her nakedness with a dress featuring a photograph by New York photographer/filmmaker Tom Davenport (clipped from a 1967 photography magazine). Pasted down on Jean Dubuffet's ink drawing entitled "Site á la Rose", 1960.

Here's a take on "less is more." (See beginning of text under "splatter pop.") It doesn't make much sense, anatomically or artistically, but as I pawed my way through clippings from recent Interview magazines, these three pieces kept insisting they wanted to be together. So what the hey...

prom dress: a william morris fantasy

From my archives. I have no idea why I signed up for a "fantasy prom dress" postcard swap, since I hate proms. In high school, I blew off my junior prom, and I only went to the senior prom because the administration of my small private school forced me to. =sigh=

But perhaps if I'd had this dress...

My fantasy prom dress would be fashioned of a lightweight cotton--slightly shiny, like chintz--in a pattern by the late Victorian multi-talented designer William Morris. I chose his "Pimpernel" pattern, which features leaves & blossoms swirling in a figure-of-eight pattern. The dress design itself, as pictured, is pretty simple: the neckline and drop waist would be trimmed with bands of black velvet. (The black bars on the postcard are black velvet ribbon.)

My agenda for this week has two parts: (1) have fun!--which means doing things I've never done before, like cutting off the lower left corner; and (2) explore both "less is more" and "more is more." I discovered it's a lot of work to truly have fun. =laugh= This one is (obviously) about "more is more."

The black confection really is a skirt: it started out a lot wider, like a huge metallic bubble. Of course I cut out the spiky hem.

I have been busy cutting up old exhibition catalogues and art books, my favorite thing to do (besides, of course, creating collages out of the images)!

Included are Elie Nadelman's "Hostess" circa 1918-20, painted cherry wood and Marcel DuChamp's "Jacquette" (Front and Back) circa 1956, a collage drawing. Pasted down on William Baziotes "Sea Forms" 1951, pastel.

I'll admit it: this collage did double duty as an entry for the Kollage Kit blog and a postcard for the swap-bot swap "Burnt Mail Art." I thought y'all might appreciate the vintage stamps & artistamps & a little "postoid",  plus my penchant for glueing leftover collage elements on the other side. =grin=

I had a dream of fire

 

This isn't some random collage I'm shoehorning into the dream theme. Like so much of my work, this is personal. I'm bipolar, and for reasons I won't go into, I had a short-lived manic episode on Saturday. By the time I was tossing and turning in bed around 1 AM, I felt as though my brain was literally on fire. When I closed my eyes, I could see inside my cranium—nothing but flames. When I finally fell asleep, I had a dream of fire. Lots of fire.

The strange-looking liquid mass in the bottom middle was captioned "runoff from nickel mining." What I wanted was lava, 'cause there was a volcano in my dream. That's the closest I could find.

The fire thoughts have lingered for days, but guess what: collage (and art in general, of course) is therapeutic. Now that I've cut out and glued down all that fire, I feel cool as a cucumber. =smile=

I'm having a rough time in my rehab, which is always two steps forward, one step back. So I'm posting one from my archives.

In August 2014, my husband and I picked up a brother-sister pair of oriental shorthair kittens from our breeder. This collage was a gift for the woman who breeds these lively, social, charming cats.

Oriental shorthairs are close relatives of Siamese, and are sometimes described as the "greyhounds of the cat breeds": they are long and tall and skinny with long faces and big ears. As for the spiral tails, well, spirals can mean many things, but in the nature religion I practice they stand for regeneration and renewal. That's the kind of energy I need these days!

I'm so sorry about your loss, Angie. I've lost five beloved cats, so I know what you're going through. Freud had an apt phrase for it: "The work of mourning."

My Pretty Pets

When I picked this week's theme "PETS" I had no idea that on that very day I was going to have to say goodbye to my beloved dog "Harvey" the cockapoo (or Spoodle as they are known in the UK).  Harvey entered my life 9 years ago when he was 2 years old. I was his daytime dog-sitter and eventually adopted him full time although he actively remained in the life and heart of his former owner and we thought of ourselves as a pack.  Harvey turned 11 on March 24th. On April 9th he exhibited catastrophic symptoms of some sort of poisoning? The vets were never clear. But we nursed him back to what we thought was health. On May 5th he became quite ill again and was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma -- ruptured spleen and subsequent discovery of many metastatic liver lesions.  GOODBYE MY DEAR LITTLE FRIEND. I BELIEVE WE WILL BE TOGETHER AGAIN.

Yes, that is me at around age 5.
