Arachnophobia
When I was a very young but precocious reader, I found a story in one of my mother's magazines that scared and thrilled me. A mother was putting her baby daughter to sleep, singing softly and watching over her. In a hidden corner of the same room, a mother spider was watching over her baby spiders, doing whatever maternal things arachnids do. I think the point of the story must have had something to do with mothers of different species taking care of their young; however, I of course completely missed the maternal metaphor. I KNEW that after the story ended and the human mother had left the room, the vicious spider would creep over to the human baby and bite her to death. Don't have much love for spiders...

I love this Lynn - both the collage and the story!
ReplyDeleteGreat image! Your imagination serves you well Lynn.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, superb collage! I love the gawky grace of the spider's long legs as they reach down across the image...
ReplyDeleteThanks! Fi, you might recognize a couple of my spider's leg extensions -- a few cuttings from an image of Louise Bourgeois' giant spider sculpture "Maman." She had a few mother issues...
DeleteI keep thinking about this piece, it could also be a wonderful tribute piece to artist Louise Bourgeois.
ReplyDeleteI saw some of her pieces in person for the first time a few years ago; they were haunting, menacing and wonderful, all at the same time.
DeleteThat's a very scary spider. Great collage.
