stars 'n' stripes 'n' vaguely menacing melons
Flag background by Chandra Glick. Melon pics by William Rowe. Snippet of still life (Dole pineapple, Breakstone yogurt, usw.) by Tom Wessellmann.
I'm curious: how do y'all feel about using other people's work in your collages? Of course, we're almost always using something that originated with another artist, but how 'bout when it's as blatant as the flag in this collage? I worried a lot about this issue in the first year or so of my work as a collage artist and did a lot of research—by which I mean that I interviewed a lot of collage artists and a lot of people whose art I was so brazenly appropriating (always giving them due credit). As you've no doubt noticed, I came to the conclusion that (a) the legal/copyright issues don't matter, what with the widespread use of "sampling" in a variety of media—and the laws are very much in flux right now—and (b) artists like it when their work, with acknowledgment, is exposed to a wider public. I figure if anyone ever objects to something I've posted online, I'll just take it down, pronto. If the artist I'm sampling wants me to change the wording of my acknowledgment, I'm happy to do that as well. Maybe it helps that I have a code, as an artist, of giving away (usually through the postal system) almost all of my originals. I've never earned a penny from my artwork, and don't plan to.
I'm always interested to hear about how other collage artists resolve these questions!
BTW, apologies for the poor quality of the scan. My trusty ol' scanner died a while back, and I've been having to use my husband's, which doesn't do color very well.

our allies need eggs
Face in egg cup by Odilon Redon.
Those wartime sensibilities... hard to fathom. I can't help thinking that the eggs are going to crack open and drench those fires with their contents.
Models and Mashed Potatoes
I heard this song and could not get mashed potatoes out of my mind! So I had to make a collage about them. And now I want to eat some.

THEME: Collage must include food of some sort
This is the last Thursday in January. And my last theme.
Thanks for everyone's creative work for the challenges I posed.
Who wants to take over starting February 2nd?

A Fable
I´m working on a new series with fable illustrations -
this is the lastest one I finished yesterday and which fits to our theme this week.
Homage to History's Forgotten Women Aviators
Before Amelia Earhart, three female pilots attempted the transatlantic journey made famous by Charles Lindbergh.
Elsie Mackay was a British actress, interior decorator and pioneering aviator. Mabel Boll, known as the Queen of Diamonds, was an American socialite. And Ruth Elder, a beauty pageant contestant, used her winnings for flying lessons and became the preeminent American girl of the sky.
I have represented two of the women as I imagined them back in the 1920s, and the third is up in the sky!

Folk Artist Poses with His Monumental Bird Sculpture
Don't remember who that blue man is (cut from vintage sheet music). The largest bird is a vintage chalkware carnival prize, the eagle is a carving from the stern of a tugboat and the penguin is a bit of folk art, circa 1880, that comes from The Nantucket Island Yacht Club.
And of course the background is pure Van Gogh. "Road with Cypresses" 1889.

three birdy envelopes
This theme, especially Hitchcock's movie, really inspires me, so I will definitely be creating a new collage. In the meantime, I thought I'd share three birdy envelopes I made for a woman who likes crows/ravens, swans, and peacocks. In each case the front of the envelope is on the top, the back on the bottom. The "Pisceana" artstamps on each envelope are my own creation.
The crow/raven and swan envelopes are pretty self-evident, but it's worth explaining that for the peacock envelope I expanded in the direction of male beauty, male pride. (Note that the peacock pic folds over the bottom of the envelope.)
These were supposed to be envelopes the recipient would actually use to put letters in the mail, but she refused to "mar them with address labels and stamps." I intended them to be enhanced by address labels and stamps, and even (sort of) left spaces for that stuff. Oh well... =shrug=

The Bird Hotel
One from the archives just in case I don't get round to making anything this week - still on holiday mode!
In Which I Make a Brief Appearance Before I Leave Town Again.....
Busy, busy, busy. But, just so you don't forget me, here's a quick little contribution to this week's theme. (Yes, I do love birds!) I'll be back home mid-January, and then plan to stick around a bit so I'll be posting and contributing on Kollage Kit on a more regular basis after that, I promise. Until then...
The Sacrifice
THEME: THE BIRDS
I thought I would kick off 2017 with a recurring theme that we all seem to like. Have fun.
