ATOMIC GARDENING - Sir John Betjemen's Rocket
From the archives.
"How long it flew, how straight it flew,
It cleared the leafy gardens
And soaring disappeared from view
Beyond Windsor , Brent and Morden
A glorious , whizzing rocket now
That's on it's way to Slough"
Sir John Betjeman CBE was an English poet, writer, and broadcaster who described himself in Who's Who as a "poet and hack". He was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1972 until his death. He was a founding member of the Victorian Society and a passionate defender of Victorian architecture.
