I started by finding a suitable background (beautiful blue sky in this beach scene) for the part of the photo that just featured the flying carpet and clouds (I removed the buildings that were originally in the photo).
Then I felt I needed a spectator and I found a great image of Katharine Hepburn glancing skyward! But, unbeknownst to be, a mere 9 years later Kate would star with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. in the film "Morning Glory" (1933).

Who wouldn't like a Magic Carpet trip...Go for it Kate!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ron! I actually GOOGLED the flying carpet scene from The Thief of Bagdad and it is pretty remarkable how they accomplished that special effect in 1924!
ReplyDeleteThe flying carpet scene in the 1924 film The Thief of Bagdad used innovative, real-world special effects for its time, primarily a large crane and piano wires to move the carpet, rather than projection or early green screen technology. Star Douglas Fairbanks stood on a steel sheet that was rigged to the crane, which moved the carpet at about 25 miles per hour to simulate flight.
