Jackson Pollock described abstract art as “energy and motion made visible.” He described how the art form set free a part of his psyche that previously had no voice. Artists were no longer expected to faithfully represent what they saw in the world around them. Instead, abstract art gave them licence to create art by prioritising instinct or the unconscious.

Well what a hoot! I'm not particularly wise or owl-like but definatley old and a collagist so two out of four ain't bad!

CREATE A SELF PORTRAIT in COLLAGE

Totally inspired by Hannah Hoch (1889-1978) I first wanted to find a piece of art that had the shape of my face to collage on. And this background was perfect (however, I rotated the grey egg shape from horizontal to vertical and trimmed a lot of the artwork to make it look like my head is on a curvy pedestal).

The artwork I found is by John Graham(1881-1961) entitled "Nature Morte" 1929-30:

My eyes have always been a feature many have commented on and I found a fashion photo circa 1960s of those flowery eyes. I wear a lot of berets and I thank Lotte Lenya for that one (found in the same book as the eyes).

“Smooshed together”

We saw a film recently called “Substance”… a dig at the beauty industry…horrible film!

So I used a very chopped up book of film stars and “smooshed” some of the bits together to try and create my beautiful alter ego…

It looks nothing like me…sorry..
