Theme of the Week: 'Horror Vacui'

Horror Vacui means (from Greek) 'fear of the empty', means in art 'filling the entire surface with detail'.
Horror Vacui is well known in painting and drawings of the outsider art and the art brut, but also in collages ... google the word and you find lots of images.
One of my favorite artist in collage is  Colin Johnson
Let's challenge ourselves!

This is also the last theme this month and I wanna thank you for joining me this month with your inspirational art!
Who's gonna be next?

  1. I'll do the themes for December. I think I'd be a good person to do them, because I'm a Celtic pagan, so December is not a big-deal holiday time for me. We do celebrate the pagan holiday called Yule, on the Winter Solstice, with a big fire and an all-night vigil, after which we go outside minutes before sunrise, to wave and cheer for the return of the sun (beginning of lengthening days). But our biggest holiday is Samhain (”sow-when") AKA Hallowe'en AKA Witches' New Year. (November 1st is the onset of the pagan year.)

    1. How very interesting Fi. Here where I live, I'm surrounded by Celtic fields, and I'm often outside before sunrise for my morning-walks, because I find this the most beautiful moment of the day.
I'm looking forward to your themes of december Fi!

    2. OK, I'm stumped. What are "Celtic fields"? Were there Celts in the Netherlands? If so, I didn't know that.

  2. OMG JOSEPHINE! I have never heard the term "Horror Vacui" before and I have never heard of Colin Johnson (MINDBLOWING!) before. Since I am such a minimalist in my collage technique this will be a true challenge!! I am posting one from the archives in which I did go a bit overboard which is unlike me. Thanks for all the great themes this past month and I look forward to Fi's picks!

  4. Since I'm a science nerd from earliest childhood (my dad was a scientist, my husband is a scientist, & I was a brain scientist decades ago), humor me by looking at this article on the original meaning of horror vacui when it was coined by Aristotle. Who knows? It might inspire a collage. =grin= Besides, "Nature abhors a vacuum" is a handy phrase for lots of situations. Think of radio people shuddering at broadcast silences, for example, calling them "dead air."

Thanks for the great theme, Jo!

    2. Such an interesting article Fi., I also thought when I launched the theme that there is no emptiness
in nature, we are surrounded by fullness I guess.

I hope you are doing fine these days! And I know the feeling of not being able to produce as much as you should want. Take care of yourself Sabine.
