In a 1906 travel guide, Lilian Whiting first used the phrase "The Land of Enchantment" to describe the western territories of the United States. New Mexico officially adopted the slogan quite recently.
Pictured on "The Badlands" -- sharply eroded buttes, spires and pinnacles and mixed-grass prairie of Southwestern South Dakota -- is a lovely lady swiped from an enchanting Maxfield Parrish painting entitled "Stars". I added the wooden horse (originally a weather vane) as a ghost-like presence that probably could not survive The Badlands. The double rainbow happened to be in the photo of said territory which added a bit of enchantment, heightened by the addition of a lovely antique dragonfly brooch.
Lovely. Reminds of the time I had to plaster dust on a model village in the middle of the night at a stud farm in Surrey. I know it sounds unlikely but it did happen. I was half asleep at the time! I may have dreamt it! A white horse was lead up a ramp behind the model for a photo shoot. It was an advert for White Horse Whisky! Thankfully no other late nights in the middle of fields - well, none I'm telling you about anyway!
ReplyDeleteWoW...that is so interesting. Glad I could jog your memory about the White Horse advert. And c'mon tell us more about late nights in the middle of fields ... LOL.
