closed up in a box, yet failing to hide

This one is definitely personal. I had what one might call a difficult childhood. The first thing I thought of with regard to body image is the need for protection. Hence a frame: a hand-crafted Mexican frame in honor of my growing up in Texas. The spiky points are also fitting.

Next I thought of a box, wanting a box I could crawl into and hide.  I almost made a collage of just a closed metal box inside of that frame.

But the problem was, I couldn't hide, no matter how hard I tried.

  1. Whoa Fi...thanks for sharing the meaning behind this piece, which at first glance is very intriguing and not obvious. Re: the the cube. It could be made of lucite, allowing the world to not pass the child by? Perhaps one side of it is absent and the child can crawl in and out of it at will? Powerful stuff you've dealt with.

  2. It's a beautiful collage Fi, the spiky frame is perfect with the meaning behind it. I can relate with that girl and her/your feelings.

  3. Jeez, Fi, perfect little image here and a gut punch to go with it. Love the spikey Mexican frame and how our little girl is off-center...I guess she's not the center of anyone's universe, is she?
