A cute bedtime story .....

BEWARE!

BEWARE!
On a dark & stormy night,
ghosts and ghouls are in plain sight --
especially a horse of white!

I researched this and found: In some cultures, white horses stand for the balance of wisdom and power. In others, like Christianity, the white horse is a symbol of death.

THEME: It was a dark and stormy night ...

Inspired by Lynn´s contribution to the weekly them "Books" at the beginning of October  - and as Halloween is coming closer - I have chosen this theme for us. I´m pretty sure that we have had this one some years ago (and I guess it was Angie´s idea once) but we all had fun with this, so ...

Lynn wrote "some background from Wikipedia:  "It was a dark and stormy night" is an often-mocked and parodied phrase written by English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton in the opening sentence of his 1830 novel "Paul Clifford."

This was the last theme I had to pick for us this month. If I am not totally wrong Josephine is the next in line.

Have fun!

overwhelmed by klee (an homage)

Paul Klee was a prolific artist (and teacher of art) who worked in quite a few different styles. When I set about making a collage in honor of Klee, I was overwhelmed by all the many directions I might go. Finally, I decided to limit myself to picking up a few motifs from different paintings. (Yes, the big red arrow is a Paul Klee motif.)

kandinsky loves color

Wassily Kandinsky played a special role in my art education. The parents of a friend of mine had a Kandinsky print in their living room. I was ten years old, and I'd never seen an abstract before. I was blown away.

I've always thought it's a good exercise for an artist to copy a painting they admire. I'll leave it to you to figure out (if you're interested) which Kandinsky inspired me to make this mixed-media piece: paper, glue, acrylic paint and markers. Kandinsky's eye for composition is a heck of a lot better than mine, so please view this as an homage, not an attempt at an exact copy.

Found Photo + Elements of Picasso

Found photograph of terrified child and father. "Young Acrobat and Child" 1905 and "The Arm" 1959 bronze by Pablo Picasso.

Homage to Kurt Schwitters

I really admire Kurt Schwitters, because he was a multitalented and über-creative Dadaist!
Some days ago I visited the Sprengel Museum in Hannover to see the giant Kurt Schwitters archive and the reconstruction of one his MERZ-rooms in Hannover, which he started to build 1931 and which was destroyed 1943 during a bomb raid. To stand in this room was a very special experience - and therefore I made this collage.

queen of wasps: lost episode

If you don't think wasps are dangerous, you must never have been chased by a cloud of angry yellowjackets (hornets) after accidentally disturbing their nest. =smile= Their stings have a lot of venom in them, and hurt like the dickens!

"Mind the Puddles, Dear"

Danger at the Falls

Moments after this photograph was snapped poor Miss Fletcher forgot where she was and stepped backwards before she turned around to admire the tremendous falls.

Elements in this collage include a photograph of Upper Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan, pretty flowers from the French Riviera and an 18th C. etching of a woman with umbrella and Christmas gifts.

The Old Man and The Sea

Coincidentally I am participating in a challenge presented by a local used book & record shop to "Redesign a Classic" book cover OR record album cover.  I chose Hemingway's classic. I think he might have had a chuckle!

Famous First Lines From a BOOK...

It Was a Dark and Stormy Night (London 1040)

I am headed out of town, right into the mouth of a monster hurricane hitting the East Coast, so here's a quick one from the archives.  Some background from Wikipedia:  "It was a dark and stormy night" is an often-mocked and parodied phrase written by English novelist Edward Bulwer-Lytton in the opening sentence of his 1830 novel "Paul Clifford."  The phrase is considered to represent "the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style of fiction writing," also known as purple prose.

esemplastic

The word "esemplastic," coined by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, means "having the ability to shape diverse elements or concepts into a unified whole."

A worthy goal for collage artists, don't ya think?
