Food and Drink - Hurrah! Die Butter Ist Alle!

  1. Well, you had me at this one! So I GOOGLED your title and was educated!

This is anti-Nazi work by Heartfield, who anglicised his name (Helmut Herzfeld) in protest at WW1. The quote by Goering at a speech in Hamburg, seen at the foot of the image, says "Iron has made the country strong but butter and lard have only made the people fat". The happy Nazi family are therefore glad that the butter is gone and they can start in on their bicycles and boltsIt is a deeply satirical look at what Goering and the Nazis were putting out in their own propaganda, created by the Berlin Dadaists (of whom Heartfield was one of the artists). Referring to HerrHasen's remark on the eating side - no, Heartfield was simply showing up the foolishness of anyone that took Goering's words seriously.
The German Dadaists were hounded by the SS - some went into hiding and others, like Heartfield, fled the country (Heartfield went to Czechoslovakia).

    1. Thanks Angie. Just me trying to be clever! I found the duck picture and thought it woud be fun for them to be eating something odd and unlikely. Bits of metal , yes, like that propaganda poster by John Heartfield. Funny how these things fall into place.
