superstition: The Scottish Play.

The Scottish Play and the Bard's play are euphemisms for Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The first is a reference to the play's Scottish setting, the second a reference to Shakespeare's popular nickname. According to a theatrical superstition, called the Scottish curse, speaking the name Macbeth inside a theatre, other than as called for in the script while rehearsing or performing, will cause disaster.

At the 94th Academy Awards Chris Rock congratulated Denzil Washington on his performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth saying the name of the Scottish play aloud in the Dolby Theatre. Moments later, Rock was slapped by Will Smith after making a joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Viewers, including playwright Lynn Nottage, quickly took to social media to joke that Rock had suffered the curse of the Scottish play.

  1. Oh wow! I just read your description aloud to my husband who knew of the curse of the Scottish play but said he did not make the connection re: incident at Academy Awards. (I must admit to not knowing about the curse and I thank you for new knowledge which I find The Kollage Kit always provides to me!) Excellent interpretation of this theme!

  2. Great bit of snippage! Could never get into Shakespeare - even Midsummer Night's Dream was too much for me! ( We had to study it at school for "O" level exam).

  3. Thanks Angie & Michael. "Shakespoke" at school was abundant. I remember the chortles when the profanities were read out.
