Hellenic Hikers

A parade of Grecian artifacts pasted down on a vintage hand-colored photograph!

  1. This is great, but I find the road a little unsettling! Maybe because it reminds me of some roads in Greece that I saw on holiday once in the mid 70s - on all the treacherous roads, especially on dangerous corners, there was often a small glass-fronted light blue painted wooden box by the side of the road, with old photos of people, and candles in, and little trinkets and flowers on shelves.

It turned out they were shrines to those who had perished at that spot, sometimes there were several, at especially dangerous places. Years later, when I saw Joseph Cornell's shadow-boxes, I remembered those shrines, and now again today, seeing this collage! :)

    1. Glad to have jogged your memory, Steve, even though they are unsettled thoughts. Curiously, I have never been to Greece and had no idea of some of the roads there. Also, this vintage photo is of an American road (somewhere out west?) and I covered a Model-T auto motoring the road with the large statue.

  3. Well, not too unsettled, just reminded me of the strangeness – and I expect Greek roads have got a lot better in the 40 or so years since I went there :) That's good covering-up - I would never have guessed that there had been a car underneath the statue!
