American Women of The Glamour Years, Paris (1919-1940) Commemorative Series 65 cent Imperforate (not perforated) Issue #3 ROMAINE BROOKS
Romaine Brooks (1874-1970) born Beatrice Romaine Goddard. American painter who worked mostly in Paris and Capri. She specialized in portraiture. She enjoyed dressing as a man.
I had heard of Romaine Brooks, but really didn't know much about her—a lapse that embarrasses me since I've long been a fan of Parisian culture at the turn of the century and the first couple of decades of the 20th century. Thank you, Angie, for stimulating me to watch a couple of YouTube videos about her. I'm tempted to get that biography of her that us descibed as revealing the woman behind the artist's mask. This is a super portrait with that iconic hat, and the placement of the paintbrush is great, suggesting the brush as a staff for Ms. Brooks. And by the way, I love the font or "65” in all of these artstamps.
I love your series, Angies! Great stamps - you should send them to the US-Post for being published! I just can echo the others - I have not heard about her before - so an interesting discovery - thanks!

ReplyDeleteI meant to say "that IS described" and "I love the font for '65' in all of these artistamps."
DeleteThanks! The 65 comes from a book called HIPPIES. It was repeated throughout the pages and I thought the font fit the era.
DeleteI had never heard of her and see she's a very good painter!
ReplyDeleteOh, that is not her painting behind her. She painted portraits. GOOGLE her and see what comes up!
