The scream of the butterfly.

  1. WOW!

I just watched a YouTube of the Doors song "Scream of the Butterfly" which I never knew was inspired (I guess JUST the title) by a soft-core porn film of the same name that was popular at the time. If you have a little over ten minutes:

Great collage, captures both the spirit of the Doors song and the film (or what you see of the film in the YouTube).

    WOW!

    1. Gosh, I had no idea it was the name of that kind of film! just took the Doors' lyric from 'When The Music's Over' (the song they refer to in the YouTube vid (although they don't specifically name it in the text, maybe for copyright reasons..?)

I always liked the (guitar? or keyboard?) noise that comes directly after Jimbo sings that line... and so thought that would nicely serve as 'strange music'...

The butterfly was the last bit I added, it's actually a children's toy tattoo, which is why there are water splots all over the already-damaged paper with the green face on!

And is also my excuse for why the butterfly isn't placed centrally on top of the keyhole/ear bit, because these tattoos have to be applied face-down onto the skin... I'm quite surprised that they can actually stuck to wet paper too!

  2. Terrific piece, Steve! I'm so imoressed by the creativity in your technique... Did you use some kind of image transfer to get the torn paper and words to layer with (on?) the photo of the blonde?

  3. Thank you Fi! The photo of the girl was from the cover of 'Jackie' magazine, a UK mag for teenage girls that was quite groundbreaking in its day... the words were on the cover too...

when it came to it, I couldn't bear to cut the mag up, so photocopied it twice on my rubbish printer/scanner. I coloured in one of the copies with Econoline brush pens...

I left it to dry for a bit, then started working on it, then tore a bit of the other unpainted copy, and stuck it on top... the only image transfer that happened really was more green paint/ink going everywhere, then me applying the butterfly tattoo on after that, accidentally staining the coloured-in copy while doing so!
My trademark 'messiness' strikes again :)
