Rhyme Time Resolution

she's writing a book

This is not art! This is an announcement of one of the first New Year's resolutions I've ever taken seriously. It's a chance to tell my Kollage Kit friends that after my two months of themes in January and February, I'll be fading (mostly) from the Kollage Kit, in order to focus on the autobiographical novel I'm writing. I'll still drop in from time to time. I like you guys a lot, and besides, you're great inspiration for my collages! But my participation will go way down...

In case you've ever wondered why my avatar is Elsa Lanchester as "The Bride of Frankenstein," I'll just say this: I myself do not know why. One of the driving questions of my book is trying to figure that out. =laugh=

Theme of the Week: A New Year's Resolution

"A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behavior, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life." (from Wikipedia)

Again, like last weeks Christmas thing, this week another theme to do with this time of year…but of course, open to your interpretation, Kollage Kitters… i.e. you decide whether it be:
serious/true or jokey/false, yours or someone else's, spooky, funny, tragic, singular/plural or whatever you fancy!

This will be my last theme of the month, thank you all for your wonderful responses to my themes, it's been fun, delightful and surprising, but now it's time to hand over the reins!
Out with the old, in with the new… and a very Happy New Year to you all!

The front and the back of our 2018 holiday card...

Every year I make our holiday card and have it professionally printed.
Since I do not have an address for most of my fellow Kollage Kitters, here is an image of the front & back of the card and my wish for you all.

Inside sentiment:

May the months to come
bring the best of times.

Theme of the Week: A CHRISTMAS FREE-FOR-ALL!!!

Well, it would be churlish, in a 'Bah Humbug!' sort of way, not to have this week's theme full of festive cheer, so yes, please feel free to pick'n'choose whatever you'd like, on the subject of that thing that happens on December 25th, and/or surrounding days!
Merry Christmas, Kollage Kitters one and all!

A Quiet Night In

Another from the archive.

"I hate being an object"

I don't know if this counts as "strange music," but a few weeks ago I heard Kim Carnes's "Bette Davis Eyes" on the radio, and it made me want to make a collage about a celebrity. So I looked through a photograph book and found this image of Marilyn Monroe, snapped in 1960 by Eve Arnold. In 1962 Marilyn Monroe said, "I do not consider myself a kind of merchandise but I am sure that many people do not see anything else in me... That is what annoys me: a sex symbol becomes an object. I hate being an object."

Machinery photos (1900) taken by Bernd & Hilla Becher are of blast furnaces that turn iron ore into molten metal, which is then poured into a mold.

The Freak Zone

Inspired by Stuart Marconi's programme on BBC6 Music. From the archives.

LISTENING TO STRANGE MUSIC

Ever think about the music that might be coming from Pablo Picasso's music paintings? Well, this theme made me wonder and I bet it would be pretty strange.

Listening to the music is Picasso's "Woman in Blue" 1902.
Conducting the music is Glen Gray (courtesy of sheet music I found at a second-hand shop).
Picasso paintings in this collage:
"Violin" 1913
"Ma Jolie" 1914
"Guitar" 1916
"Three Musicians" 1921
"Still Life with a Cake" 1924

This Week's Theme: Listening to Strange Music...

I borrowed the excellent 'This Is Memorial Device' from the library on Saturday - a fictional (?!) account of an '80s Scottish band and the scene that revolved around them…

Reading it, it's reminding me of a painting that I saw once, years ago, which was called something like 'Listening to Strange Music', I've tried several times to Google it, but all to no avail, so instead, I thought it should be the theme for this week's collage...

Listening to strange music can be annoying/beautiful/boring/disorientating/sad/happy etc, but what does the experience look like, in collage form? Over to you, Kollage Kitters!

This week's theme: Night In The City

I've been re-listening to the Joni Mitchell song of the above name recently… and it struck me as a good theme, especially now it's turned December and it gets dark so early here in London...

And here is Joni, singing the song back in 1967… something slightly spooky about this song, and also the washed-out black-and-whiteness of the film here, but I can't quite work out what it is...

après le déluge, ceci

A scrapbox collage from earlier this year. The title is a joke, but if you don't get it, never mind: it's not that funny.

denizens of scrapland

What I find fascinating about the box of scraps on my work table: while appearing to be the least orderly place in my studio, while not having some label like "orange" or "animals" or the title of a book, it's a place where new connections, new kinds of order, are always being formed. All I have to do is look...
